Does a family history of baldness seal your fate? What can you eat after a hair transplant? And should you start GFC therapy before hair loss even begins? These three very different questions came from viewers — and each gets a clear answer.

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — responds to each query.

Does family history guarantee baldness?

Viewer Seshulingam asked if baldness is certain when there is a family history, and whether his baldness could be more severe than his parents'.

Dr. Watts said no one can say with definite certainty that you will become bald because of family history — but there is a likelihood. "Due to family history of baldness, the next immediate generation has 30-40% chance of developing baldness but there is no certainty. It may or may not occur at all also," said Dr. Watts.

On severity, he explained it depends on several factors. "Your baldness can be more severe than your parents if you notice that your baldness process started very early in age. This can get aggravated if you have stress problems or lifestyle issues or if you are using chemical laced hair care products rampantly," he explained.

Food and liquor after a hair transplant

E Satish Raju, one month past his hair transplant, asked whether he could eat non-vegetarian food and consume liquor, and how to manage scalp sweating.

Dr. Watts clarified that food restrictions apply only during the initial 2-3 days after a transplant. "There is no food restriction one month after a hair transplant. During the initial 2-3 days, soft foods are recommended. That's all," he explained.

He did advise consuming liquor only in limited quantities. For sweating, he suggested taking a head bath twice a day, or gently dabbing/pressing the scalp with a piece of cloth to absorb excess sweat.

Who should use GFC — and when?

Santosh Kumar asked whether GFC can be used preventively, even before thinning starts.

Dr. Watts explained that Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) is an advanced version of PRP. It prolongs the anagen phase of the hair and lengthens and strengthens it. Combined with hair medicines, the results can double.

However, GFC should not be used as a preventive measure in the early stage of thinning. "In the early stage of hair thinning or hair fall, one must use basic medicines or improve nutritional intake. Besides taking care of one's hair, one can also take biotin supplements in the early stages of baldness. This is sufficient at this stage and one may not need to use GFCs," he explained.

Only in the advanced stage of baldness should one consider PRP, GFC or stem cell therapy. He also cautioned against GFC for anyone with bleeding disorders: "Before using GFCs, one should mandatorily undergo some routine tests to rule out any bleeding disorders and ensure one's platelets count is normal."

The bottom line

Family history gives roughly a 30-40% chance of baldness in the next generation — a likelihood, not a certainty — and early onset, stress, lifestyle and harsh products can worsen it. After a transplant, food restrictions last only 2-3 days. And GFC is not a preventive tool: start with basic medicines, nutrition and biotin in the early stages, reserving GFC or PRP for advanced cases after proper screening tests.

Frequently asked questions

Will I definitely go bald if my parents are bald?

No. With a family history, the next immediate generation has a 30-40% chance of developing baldness, but there is no certainty — it may or may not occur.

Can I eat non-veg food and drink liquor one month after a hair transplant?

Yes. Food restrictions apply only for the first 2-3 days, when soft foods are recommended. Liquor should be consumed only in limited quantities.

Can GFC be used to prevent hair loss before it starts?

No. In the early stages, basic medicines, better nutrition and biotin supplements are sufficient. GFC, PRP or stem cell therapy are options for the advanced stage of baldness.

Are there any precautions before GFC therapy?

Yes. Routine tests are mandatory to rule out bleeding disorders and to ensure the platelet count is normal before starting GFC.
