If you have noticed the hair in the middle of your scalp losing volume, you may have come across Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) as a possible fix. But does it really increase hair volume, and do the results last?

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — answers a viewer named B Vishnuvardhan, who asked exactly these questions.

Does GFC actually work?

According to Dr. Watts, GFC treatment may help increase hair volume at some point in time, but the outcome depends on the stage of hair loss you have reached.

"Yes, it works but the results depend upon some factors. For example, if you still have baby hair and some terminal hair, you can see some growth of thick hair with GFC treatment. But, if your spot is completely bald, no GFC treatment may work in such a scenario," explained Dr. John Watts.

In other words, GFC strengthens and thickens hair that still exists in some form. It cannot create hair on a spot that has gone completely bald.

How is GFC different from PRP?

Many people confuse GFC with PRP, since both are injection-based treatments prepared from your own blood. Dr. Watts explains the basic difference: PRP comes along with platelets and growth factors, while GFC relies only on the growth factors in a refined and concentrated form.

"This is the reason why one can expect better results with GFC rather than PRP," he explained.

Are GFC results permanent?

This is where Dr. Watts gives a carefully qualified answer: "It can be answered in both yes and no."

GFC can provide permanent hair growth if your hair loss is caused by nutritional deficiency, weight loss, lack of rest or stress. In those cases, once you fix the underlying issue, the regrown hair stays.

"In the first scenario, GFC would show permanent results if one starts taking proper nutrition and rest while in the second situation, there would only be temporary results. Initially, there would be baby hair growth and further hair fall would be controlled with GFC treatment but such results won't last long," explained Dr. John Watts.

The "second situation" he refers to is genetic baldness (androgenetic alopecia). If your hair loss is hereditary, GFC can give baby hair growth and slow down further hair fall, but those results are temporary.

Where can you get GFC done?

Dr. Watts confirmed that a state-of-the-art facility for GFC treatment is available at his clinic, Trichos, in Hyderabad. However, he was candid that nobody needs to travel to Hyderabad solely for GFC — the procedure can be performed by any qualified neighbourhood dermatologist.

The bottom line

GFC is a genuine, useful treatment — but it is not magic. It works best when you still have baby or terminal hair in the thinning area, and its results are permanent only when the root cause of your hair loss is correctable, such as poor nutrition or stress. For genetic baldness, expect temporary improvement, not a cure. The first step is always a proper diagnosis of why you are losing hair.

Frequently asked questions

Does GFC treatment work for hair loss?

Yes, but results depend on the stage of hair loss. If you still have baby hair and some terminal hair, GFC can thicken them. If the spot is completely bald, GFC will not work.

What is the difference between PRP and GFC?

PRP contains platelets along with growth factors, while GFC uses only growth factors in a refined, concentrated form. According to Dr. Watts, this is why GFC can give better results than PRP.

Are GFC results permanent?

They can be permanent if your hair loss is due to nutritional deficiency, weight loss, stress or lack of rest and you correct those causes. If your hair loss is genetic, results are temporary.

Do I need to travel to a special clinic for GFC?

No. While advanced facilities exist, GFC can be performed by any qualified neighbourhood dermatologist.
