A receding hairline is a natural process that all of us experience at some point. In males it may start as early as 15–16 years of age. The problem arises when the hairline starts receding fast rather than being a slow and gradual process.

Is there anything you can do to arrest a fast-receding hairline? In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — trichologist, dermatologist and one of the top hair transplant surgeons in Hyderabad with over 1,900 hair and beard transplants — shares seven practical steps.

First, understand why it is receding

“One must first understand why one's hairline is receding fast. For women, it could be because of traction issues — a strong pull as hair is tied tightly in a ponytail or bun. For men, it could be wearing tight caps or a turban. There could be hormonal or hereditary issues as well,” informs Dr. John Watts.

Instead of worrying, he suggests getting a blood test to rule out hormonal deficiencies, and seeking treatment from a qualified dermatologist or trichologist.

Step 1: Gentle scalp massage with coconut or almond oil

Massage the hairline region of the scalp gently with coconut or almond oil. “This step helps in ensuring adequate blood supply to the hair roots,” says Dr. Watts.

Step 2: Test for vitamin deficiencies

Get checked for deficiencies of vitamin B12, vitamin D and biotin — all three play an important role in hair growth. If deficient, consult an expert and take the prescribed supplementation.

Step 3: Eat a protein-rich diet

Hair is largely protein. A protein-rich diet supports stronger hair growth.

Step 4: Lemon juice massage

A home remedy: apply lemon juice, gently massage the scalp for 15 minutes, then rinse off with shampoo. “This technique will also help in arresting a receding hairline if used regularly,” he says.

Step 5: Caffeine on the scalp

Topical caffeine is another preventive remedy Dr. Watts mentions for supporting the hairline.

Steps 6 & 7: Consistency and professional care

The remaining steps come down to a consistent hair care routine and — most importantly — timely professional diagnosis if the recession continues despite these measures.

The bottom line

A fast-receding hairline usually has an identifiable cause: traction, hormones, deficiency or heredity. Address the cause early, and you have far more options than after the hairline is gone.
