Turmeric has been part of Ayurveda and everyday Indian kitchens for centuries, but does rubbing it on your scalp or eating it actually help with hair growth and hair fall? Dr. John Watts, a Hyderabad-based dermatologist, trichologist, and hair transplant surgeon, breaks down what turmeric can and can't do for your hair.

"Yes, turmeric is linked to hair growth, controlling hair loss and keeping the hair shiny and scalp healthy," Dr. Watts said, before explaining four specific ways it helps.

How Turmeric Helps Your Hair and Scalp

The first benefit is antioxidant protection. Turmeric helps prevent the damage that free radicals do to hair, and its antioxidant properties support healthy hair growth cycles.

Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory properties, which help the scalp recover from minor injuries or mild infections. In cases of severe dandruff-like conditions, turmeric can reduce the severity and help prevent related hair loss.

It also carries antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties that help prevent infections from spreading on the scalp. And its texture gives it a scrubber-like effect -- turmeric can remove dead skin cells from the scalp, unclog pores, and keep the scalp cleaner overall.

Taken together, these four properties -- antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and exfoliating -- explain why turmeric has stayed popular in Indian hair care for so long. It doesn't work through any single mechanism, but through a combination of scalp protection and cleansing that supports the conditions healthy hair needs to grow.

Three Ways to Use Turmeric for Hair Health

Dr. Watts outlined three practical ways to use turmeric as part of a hair care routine. The first is as a hair mask: mix olive oil and turmeric in equal parts into a paste, apply it to the scalp and hair, leave it on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with a sulphate-free, aloe vera-based shampoo.

The second option is simpler -- use a reputable turmeric-based shampoo available in the market. "Go for any reputed brand of turmeric-based shampoo. It will work," Dr. Watts said.

The third way is as a food supplement, though Dr. Watts recommends consulting an Ayurveda practitioner to understand the right way to take it for this purpose.

What Turmeric Can't Do

Despite its benefits for scalp health, Dr. Watts is clear that turmeric is not a cure for baldness. "The best remedy for baldness is to opt for a hair transplant procedure. You cannot expect to grow dense hair by application of turmeric on bald spots," he said. Turmeric can support a healthy scalp and slow hair fall, but it won't regrow hair where follicles are no longer active.

How should I apply turmeric to my scalp?

Mix olive oil and turmeric in equal parts, apply as a mask for 15-20 minutes, then rinse with a sulphate-free aloe vera shampoo. A turmeric-based branded shampoo also works.
