Will vitamin supplements improve your hair growth? If yes, should you take tablets or eat vitamin-rich natural food? And which foods are rich in which vitamins?

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad who has performed over 2,000 hair transplant procedures — explores the roles vitamins play in hair growth. He notes that taking proper proteins, minerals and vitamins through natural food in our diet helps meet daily requirements, as these determine hair growth by 90-95%.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is fat-soluble. Dr. Watts cites research showing that deficiency in vitamin A leads to hair fall — but so does excess. "The same is true if there is excess intake of vitamin A. Hence, one must use or consume vitamin A-rich food at an optimum level only as required," he informed.

Rich sources include green leafy vegetables like spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes and red peppers; fruits like mango, papaya and apricots; milk products such as cheese, milk and yoghurt; and eggs and oily fish.

Vitamin B complex

The second key group is vitamin B complex — a combination of 8 B vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate) and B12 (cobalamin). Dr. Watts has dedicated a separate video to the specific B vitamins involved in hair growth and their natural sources.

Vitamin C

Known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C has antioxidant properties that counteract free radicals and help control premature greying. "You look young as vitamin C helps the skin and hair to get their glow," informed Dr. Watts, adding that proper intake of vitamin C also helps in preventing cancer. Deficiency can lead to scurvy or bleeding problems of the teeth and mouth.

Vitamin C-rich foods include citrus fruits like oranges, grapes, amla, lemon, peppers and strawberries.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D comes in three types: vitamin D, D2 and D3. "Studies have shown that if one is deficient in vitamin D, hair fall increases. They help in keeping the hair growth cycle normal. If a blood test shows vitamin D deficiency, one must take supplements — natural or artificial," advised Dr. Watts.

Sources include fortified milk and milk products like cheese or curd, oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel, egg yolks and red meat.

Vitamin E

Known as tocopherol, vitamin E is high in antioxidant properties like vitamin C. "In a research study involving 21 people with hair loss problems, it was found that their hair growth resumed after 8 months," informed Dr. Watts, adding that vitamin E reduces oxidative stress, which helps improve hair health.

Rich sources include sunflower oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, peanut butter and spinach.

The bottom line

Vitamins A, B complex, C, D and E each play a distinct role in hair health — and most can be covered through a balanced Indian diet of leafy greens, fruits, dairy, nuts, seeds, eggs and fish. Avoid both deficiency and excess, and let a blood test, not guesswork, decide whether you need supplements.

Frequently asked questions

Which vitamins are most important for hair growth?

Dr. John Watts highlights five: vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin E — each supporting hair health in different ways.

Can too much vitamin A cause hair fall?

Yes. Research shows both deficiency and excess intake of vitamin A lead to hair fall, so it should be consumed only at an optimum level.

Does vitamin D deficiency cause hair loss?

Studies show hair fall increases with vitamin D deficiency, as vitamin D helps keep the hair growth cycle normal. If a blood test confirms deficiency, supplements are advised.

How does vitamin E help hair?

Vitamin E reduces oxidative stress through its antioxidant properties. Dr. Watts cites a study of 21 people with hair loss whose hair growth resumed after 8 months.
