It is a common confusion among people in the early stage of baldness: is PRP therapy alone enough? Will Minoxidil alone solve the problem? Or should both be used together for the best results?

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — walks through what each treatment does and what a comparative study revealed.

How PRP therapy works

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy is regarded as effective for hair growth during the early stage of baldness. The technique works by separating the growth factor from one's own blood.

About 15-20 ml of blood is drawn and processed; once the growth factor is collected, it is injected into the scalp. This procedure leads to hair growth and increases hair density.

How Minoxidil works

Minoxidil solution, which is US FDA approved, is known to show good results when applied to the region facing hair thinning. It works by increasing the blood supply to the area, promoting hair growth and increasing hair density.

The three-group study

So which approach wins? "This question was answered in the form of a study conducted on three groups of hair loss patients facing an early stage of baldness in the age group of 18-58 years," explained Dr. Watts.

The researchers formed three groups of early-stage hair loss patients aged 18-58. The first group used only PRP therapy for four months. The second used only Minoxidil solution for four months. The third used both PRP and Minoxidil simultaneously for four months.

The results

After four months, the groups were compared on two parameters: hair density (number of hairs per square centimetre) and hair thickness (diameter).

The PRP-only group showed good hair density and thickness. The Minoxidil-only group also showed good results on both parameters. But the third group — using both PRP and Minoxidil together — exhibited excellent results on both hair density and hair thickness compared to the other two groups.

"This study clearly shows that use of Minoxidil and PRP therapy simultaneously gives the best results for hair growth, hair density and hair thickness," explained Dr. John Watts.

The bottom line

Both PRP and Minoxidil work individually for early-stage baldness — but the study Dr. Watts cites shows they work best together, delivering superior hair density and thickness than either alone. If you are weighing your options in the early stage of hair loss, a combined approach under a dermatologist's supervision may give you the strongest results.

Frequently asked questions

How is PRP therapy performed?

About 15-20 ml of the patient's blood is drawn and processed to separate the growth factor, which is then injected into the scalp. This promotes hair growth and increases hair density.

How does Minoxidil help with hair thinning?

Minoxidil is a US FDA-approved solution applied to thinning areas. It increases blood supply to the region, promotes hair growth and increases hair density.

Is PRP alone or Minoxidil alone effective for early baldness?

Yes, both showed good hair density and thickness results individually in a four-month study of early-stage hair loss patients aged 18-58.

What gives the best results — PRP, Minoxidil or both?

The study group using both PRP and Minoxidil simultaneously showed excellent results in hair density and hair thickness, outperforming the groups using either treatment alone.
