How much Minoxidil should you apply on your scalp — and how long should you keep it on for the best results?

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — answers these two questions that almost every first-time Minoxidil user asks.

What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a well-established hair medication approved by the US FDA, renowned for its ability to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. But questions often arise about the correct dosage and how long to leave it on.

The recommended dosage: start at 1 ml, build to 2 ml

Typically, a daily prescription of 2 ml of Minoxidil is recommended — and it is crucial not to exceed this dosage.

“For newcomers to Minoxidil, an initial prescription of 1 ml per day is common practice. After using it for 1-2 weeks and if it suits the individual, the dosage can be increased to 2 ml per day — 1 ml in the morning and another 1 ml before bedtime,” explains Dr. Watts.

How long should it stay on the scalp?

Dr. Watts suggests that Minoxidil topical lotion can be left on the scalp overnight and rinsed off with water and shampoo the following morning.

Prefer not to go about your day with Minoxidil on your scalp? It is perfectly acceptable to wash it off after a gap of one to one and a half hours. In that case, Dr. Watts recommends applying the lotion early in the morning so you maintain that minimum one to one-and-a-half hour gap.

Which strength: 2%, 5% or 10%?

Minoxidil lotions are available in various strengths, such as 2%, 5% and 10%. Dr. Watts emphasises that this decision should not be made on your own.

“It is crucial to leave the decision of which percentage works best to the dermatologist's expertise, as they can tailor the treatment to individual needs,” he advises.

The bottom line

Minoxidil is an effective hair growth medication — but its correct usage, dosage and strength should be determined in consultation with a qualified dermatologist. Start at 1 ml daily, build up to 2 ml split between morning and night, keep it on for at least one to one and a half hours (or overnight), and never exceed the prescribed dose.
