A patient named K Janardhan Rao asked Dr. John Watts, a dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad, whether it's safe to masturbate three days after a hair transplant procedure, or whether it could damage the newly placed hair grafts. It's a question many patients have but rarely feel comfortable asking directly -- and misconceptions around it can end up damaging hair grafts.

Avoid Active Sex in the First Days

Dr. Watts explains that active sex -- where a person plays a physically strenuous role -- should be avoided for the first 4-5 days after a hair transplant. "In such a scenario, there are chances of causing damage to the hair grafts, which may get dislodged," he warns.

Masturbation Is Generally Okay, With Care

When it comes to masturbation specifically, Dr. Watts says it can be done from the 3rd or 4th day onward, provided it happens in a relaxed environment. "Stressful environment must be avoided at any cost. Aggressive movements or jerks may impact the hair grafts," he cautions.

What to Avoid, and What's Fine

Dr. Watts outlines a few clear rules for the early recovery period: avoid active or aggressive physical activity that causes sweating or raises blood pressure, as this can damage the implanted grafts; avoid any physical contact with the scalp itself, since touching or bumping the transplanted area can dislodge grafts and delay healing; and know that passive sex, such as receiving oral sex, is generally fine as long as it doesn't put pressure or friction on the scalp.

No Link Between Masturbation and Hair Loss

Dr. Watts also busts a separate, common myth: that masturbation itself causes hair loss. "There is no link between hair loss and masturbation. Due to the effect of the testosterone hormone, our body creates semen. If it is not released through masturbation, it may get automatically released through the nightfall phenomenon," he explains, referring to nocturnal emissions -- a normal physiological occurrence during sleep.
