One of the most common sources of anxiety among hair loss patients is not knowing whether their daily hair fall is within a normal range. Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad with over 2,000 successful procedures — explains what the numbers actually mean.
How many strands of hair fall is normal per day?
Vasidhar Goli, aged 18, was losing 5-10 strands per day and was worried about permanent baldness. Dr. Watts provided a reassuring explanation: losing 5 to 10 strands per day is entirely normal. Even if the hair falls out from the roots, the stem cells surrounding the hair roots will assist in regrowing new hair.
“Some individuals may naturally lose around 40 to 50 strands of hair daily, and even up to 50 to 100 strands can be considered normal, as these hairs will eventually grow back,” he explained.
When does hair fall become a problem?
The threshold Dr. Watts identifies is 100 strands per day. “If someone notices hair loss exceeding 100 strands per day, it should be considered a reason for concern, and it is advisable to promptly consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.”
Will areas that lose hair become bald?
Dr. Watts explained that hair loss can lead to the appearance of bald spots through a gradual process. “Hair will continue to grow in those areas too, but the anagen phase, which is the active growth phase, becomes shorter, and the hair gradually becomes thinner in diameter. This process is known as miniaturization,” he informed.
Miniaturised hairs become so thin and short over time that they become barely visible to the naked eye, giving the appearance of a bald spot — even though the follicle is technically still producing hair.

Frequently asked questions
How many strands of hair fall per day is considered normal?
Dr. Watts says 5-10 strands is clearly normal, and even 40-100 strands per day can fall within the normal range. Hair that falls goes through the natural Telogen phase and regrows from stem cells around the root.
At what point should I see a doctor for hair fall?
If you are consistently losing more than 100 strands of hair per day, Dr. Watts recommends consulting a dermatologist promptly for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Will a spot where I lose hair become permanently bald?
Not necessarily. Hair may continue to grow in that area, but the active growth phase becomes shorter and hairs become thinner — a process called miniaturisation — which gives the appearance of a bald spot over time.
