Hair loss myths are everywhere, and two of the most persistent ones involve hard water and sexual activity. In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts -- dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad -- addresses both questions directly.
Does hard water or water with salt and fluoride cause hair loss?
"The hair roots remain unaffected with salt or fluoride deposits, but your sweat pores and sebaceous glands can get blocked. Uncleared blockage may lead to inflammation and the formation of pustules. This may result in hair loss," explained Dr. John Watts.
The key point: the hair roots are not damaged by these deposits. Any hair loss from scalp inflammation is therefore likely to be temporary -- new hair will grow once the scalp is treated and kept clean.
Does masturbation cause hair loss?
"Masturbation should be seen as normal for any gender and it has no link with hair loss," explains Dr. John Watts. "I have answered this question on numerous occasions."
The misconception arises from confusing testosterone -- the sex hormone -- with dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the hormone responsible for genetic baldness. These are two different hormones. Masturbation does not raise DHT levels or accelerate genetic hair loss.
What actually causes hair loss?
Hair loss is most commonly caused by genetic factors (androgenetic alopecia), nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, scalp conditions, or autoimmune disorders. None of these are caused by sexual activity or occasional exposure to hard water.

Frequently asked questions
Can salt or fluoride in water damage hair roots?
No. Dr. John Watts confirms that hair roots remain unaffected by salt or fluoride deposits. However, blocked sweat pores can lead to inflammation and temporary hair loss.
Does masturbation cause hair loss or baldness?
No. Dr. Watts calls this a myth. Masturbation has no link to hair loss. The confusion arises from mixing up testosterone with DHT -- the hormone responsible for genetic baldness.
What is DHT and why does it cause baldness?
DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a hormone derived from testosterone that shrinks hair follicles in people with a genetic predisposition, leading to androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness).
