Hair loss treatments test your patience. Unlike a fever tablet that works in hours, hair medications take months to show visible change — and knowing the realistic timeline helps you stay the course.

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — answers three viewer questions about Finasteride, keratin hair masks and combination therapy.

When does Finasteride show results?

Viewer Mohan Shiva asked when he can expect results after starting Finasteride. Dr. Watts explained that unlike general medication for fever or minor conditions, results from hair treatment take time — there can be no comparison between the two.

"If you take Minoxidil lotion, the results start showing in the third month in the form of baby hair. In the first 15 days, there could be hair fall and it comes under control in a one-and-half month or two months period. These results show in the third month," said Dr. Watts.

Finasteride follows a similar pattern. "The results may show after a one-and-half month or two-month period," he explained.

Importantly, Dr. Watts warned against using Finasteride on your own without a prescription or consulting a dermatologist.

Are keratin hair masks good for hair?

Viewer Koti Kotesh asked about keratin hair masks. Dr. Watts said that using hair masks is generally good for hair.

"The advantage of hair masks is that they can revive dehydrated hair and bring lustre to the hair. The lustreless hair also gets repaired in the process and it makes them look healthy and shining," he explained, adding that a keratin hair mask adds protein and brings a smooth feel to the hair.

Can you combine Finasteride, Minoxidil and GFC?

A third viewer asked whether using a Finasteride-Minoxidil lotion along with a Finasteride 1 mg tablet and growth factor concentrate (GFC) treatment every 20 days would help hair growth.

Dr. Watts said that combining the Finasteride-Minoxidil lotion with Finasteride 1 mg and GFC treatment at a gap of 20 days — all taken together — would boost hair growth, and that this is scientifically proven.

"In general, there won't be any side effect if they are used combinedly or together but in case you experience any side effect, which is rare, you need to consult your dermatologist for expert opinion," advised Dr. Watts.

The bottom line

Give hair medications time: Minoxidil typically shows baby hair by the third month, and Finasteride results may appear after one-and-a-half to two months. Combination therapy with GFC can boost results, but never start Finasteride without a prescription — a dermatologist should guide and monitor your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Finasteride take to show results?

According to Dr. John Watts, Finasteride results may start showing after a one-and-a-half to two-month period. Hair treatments cannot be compared to quick-acting medicines for fever or minor conditions.

What is the typical Minoxidil timeline?

There may be increased hair fall in the first 15 days, which settles in about 1.5 to 2 months. Visible results in the form of baby hair start appearing in the third month.

Are keratin hair masks good for hair?

Yes, generally. Hair masks can revive dehydrated hair, restore lustre and repair dull hair. Keratin masks add protein and give hair a smooth feel.

Can Finasteride, Minoxidil and GFC be used together?

Yes. Dr. Watts says combining a Finasteride-Minoxidil lotion with a Finasteride 1 mg tablet and GFC treatment every 20 days boosts hair growth, and side effects are rare. Consult a dermatologist if any occur.
