Two common questions land in Dr John Watts's inbox again and again: can Bhringraj powder be safely consumed for hair growth, and what's the right dosage of Finasteride, 1mg or 5mg? In this video, the Hyderabad-based dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon answers both.

Can You Drink Bhringraj Powder for Hair Growth?

A viewer asked whether mixing Bhringraj powder with water and drinking it could support hair growth, and whether doing so was safe. Dr Watts explains that Bhringraj is traditionally used in Ayurvedic formulations, usually in hair oil. "When applied on the scalp, the Bhringraj used in the oil works on the hair roots and it enhances hair growth," he says.

Drinking it is a different matter. If consumed with water, Bhringraj would enter the bloodstream and would then need to act on the hair roots from there. But Dr Watts points out that no research currently exists on the bioavailability of this combination, meaning there's no scientific evidence on whether the body can actually absorb and use it this way for the scalp. In the absence of such evidence, he advises against using it as an experimental drug for hair growth.

Why You Should Never Self-Prescribe Finasteride

The second question was about the correct daily dosage of Finasteride, 1mg or 5mg. Dr Watts's first point is a warning, not a dosage: "Medications such as Finasteride should never be taken by anyone on their own." Taking prescription drugs without a doctor's guidance is unsafe, regardless of which dose someone has heard about online.

What Is the Correct Finasteride Dosage for Hair Loss?

Finasteride is prescribed to prevent genetic baldness by working as a DHT blocker. For hair loss, Dr Watts says it's usually prescribed at a 1mg dosage, and in the early days of treatment, even this 1mg dose can be split over several days rather than taken all at once.

For women dealing with genetic baldness, the dosage prescribed is sometimes higher, 2mg or 2.5mg, but Dr Watts is clear that 5mg is never prescribed for baldness treatment, for men or women.

When Is Finasteride 5mg Used?

The 5mg dose does exist, but for a completely different condition. Dr Watts explains that men over 50 with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate gland that blocks urine flow in the urinary tract, can be prescribed Finasteride at 5mg.

"However, Finasteride at such a higher dosage is never meant for use for hair growth," he clarifies. Confusing the two uses, or assuming a higher dose works better for hair loss, is exactly the kind of mistake self-medication can lead to.

Why Dosage Isn't a DIY Decision

The Bhringraj and Finasteride questions might seem unrelated, but they point to the same underlying issue: hair loss treatment decisions need to be based on evidence and professional judgement, not assumptions. Bhringraj oil has an established, traditional role in hair care, but that doesn't automatically mean the same benefit carries over if it's consumed instead of applied. Similarly, Finasteride's effectiveness at 1mg doesn't mean a higher, unsupervised dose would work faster or better; it simply exposes a patient to the risks associated with a completely different medical use.

For anyone dealing with hair loss, the safest starting point is essentially the same regardless of which product or medication is being considered: get a proper diagnosis first, and let a qualified dermatologist determine the right treatment and dosage for your specific condition and stage of hair loss.

In practical terms, this means resisting the urge to search online for a dosage that sounds more effective, or to combine remedies like Bhringraj with a prescription medication without telling your dermatologist. A treatment plan works best when your doctor has the full picture of everything you're taking and why.

Frequently asked questions

Should I drink Bhringraj powder mixed with water for hair growth?

Dr Watts advises against it. There's no research on whether Bhringraj consumed this way is actually absorbed and used by the body for hair growth, unlike its established use in scalp-applied hair oil.

What is the correct Finasteride dosage for hair loss?

For men, it's usually 1mg daily, sometimes split over several days initially. For women with genetic baldness, doctors may prescribe 2mg or 2.5mg. 5mg is never prescribed for hair loss.

What is Finasteride 5mg used for?

It's prescribed for men over 50 with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate condition, not for hair loss.

Is it safe to take Finasteride without a prescription?

No. Dr Watts warns that Finasteride and similar medications should never be taken without a doctor's prescription and supervision.
