Why gadgets don't work for dandruff
Dandruff is a fungal condition. Massaging, brushing, or scraping the scalp only removes flakes temporarily. It does not treat the underlying fungal infection that causes the flakes to keep returning. Worse, a scalp massager with stiff bristles can cause mechanical traction on hair shafts, leading to physical hair loss.
"These external methods do not address the root cause of the problem and may even lead to further hair loss," Dr. John Watts warns.
What actually treats dandruff: anti-fungal treatment
Dr. Watts recommends consulting a dermatologist, who will prescribe an evidence-based antifungal regimen based on severity: mild dandruff -- apply antifungal lotion for 1.5 to 2 hours then use anti-dandruff shampoo; severe dandruff -- apply overnight antifungal lotion, rinse the next morning, follow with anti-dandruff shampoo.
"Based on the severity of dandruff, the dermatologist may prescribe an overnight anti-fungal lotion to be rinsed with water and followed by an anti-dandruff shampoo the next morning," explains Dr. John Watts.
