Is postpartum hair loss something to worry about? Can watching porn increase DHT-related hair loss? And is it safe to undergo a hair transplant at 54?
In this article based on his Q&A video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — answers three very different viewer questions with the same scientific clarity.
Postpartum hair loss: do you need an MD Hair Kit?
Vaishnavi Ganammaneni asked whether she could use the MD Hair Restoration kit to stop her postpartum hair loss.
“There is nothing to worry about as it is a type of fake hair loss. This is quite common among women after pregnancy,” explains Dr. John Watts.
During pregnancy, the influence of the oestrogen hormone promotes hair growth. After delivery, oestrogen levels come down and that same hair falls out — which is what we call postpartum hair loss.
“Within one year to one and a half years, the lost hair is recovered again. But in case one has other types of hair loss attributable to other reasons, such as nutritional deficiency, then one needs to take medication. For postpartum hair loss, no medication may be required — not even the MD Hair Kit,” informs Dr. Watts. He advised Vaishnavi to consult a dermatologist and a nutritionist for a first-hand evaluation and better guidance.
Does watching porn cause DHT hair loss?
Naveen Kumar asked whether watching porn would increase his chances of DHT-induced hair loss. Dr. Watts calls this an unscientific connection and a misconception.
“You might be making a wild guess connecting the testosterone hormone being a trigger for sexual urge. Though scientifically it is possible for testosterone hormone to convert into DHT, there is no link with hair loss,” he explains.
DHT-related hair loss is connected with genetics or a family history of baldness. “Watching porn is not linked to DHT hair loss. Porn can only increase sexual urge,” he says.
Is 54 too old for a hair transplant?
P Srinivas, aged 54, asked if he was still eligible for a hair transplant — and whether staying under anaesthesia for 7-8 hours was risky.
Dr. Watts clarifies that during a hair transplant, only local anaesthesia is administered, at a superficial level on the scalp skin. “Your rest of the body remains totally functional. Even anaesthesia is administered under the supervision of a qualified anaesthetist. There are usually no side effects,” he explains.
If the procedure is done properly, there are no major risk factors. “Even at 70 years, you can undergo a hair transplant procedure if proper steps are followed,” informs Dr. John.
The bottom line
Postpartum shedding usually recovers on its own within 12-18 months, DHT hair loss is driven by genetics — not by what you watch — and age alone does not rule out a hair transplant. When in doubt, get a proper evaluation rather than relying on guesswork or marketing kits.

Frequently asked questions
Does postpartum hair loss need medication?
Usually not. It is a temporary form of hair loss caused by falling oestrogen levels after pregnancy, and the lost hair typically recovers within one to one and a half years. Medication is needed only if another cause like nutritional deficiency is present.
Can watching porn cause DHT hair loss?
No. DHT-related hair loss is linked to genetics and family history of baldness. There is no scientific link between watching porn and hair loss.
Is 54 too old for a hair transplant?
No. Hair transplants use only local anaesthesia on the scalp under an anaesthetist's supervision, and a properly performed procedure can be done even at 70 years of age.
