A common complaint among Minoxidil users is that applying the topical lotion twice a day, as prescribed, feels cumbersome — especially when it causes dryness or a sticky scalp. One reader, CH Rambabu, wrote in to Dr John Watts, Hyderabad's noted dermatologist and trichologist who has performed over 2,000 hair transplant surgeries, asking whether using Minoxidil only once a day would affect his hair growth, and whether a cool-setting blow dryer was safe to use before applying it.

Does Skipping to Once a Day Reduce Results?

Minoxidil is a US FDA-approved medication used to treat hair loss in men, but it can cause dryness and a sticky feel on the scalp, which makes it hard for some people to stick to a twice-daily routine. Dr Watts confirmed that not following the doctor-prescribed regime of applying Minoxidil twice a day can affect the hair growth results. "If your dermatologist has advised you to apply Minoxidil twice a day and you find it difficult to follow this regime, there are a few things you can do," he says.

A Simpler Routine to Reduce Dryness

Rather than dropping to a single application, Dr Watts suggests adjusting the timing instead. "Firstly, you can apply Minoxidil overnight and wash it off in the morning. Secondly, after taking a bath the next morning, you can use Minoxidil again," he advised. After this second, morning application, he recommends waiting at least 1 to 1.5 hours before doing a light wash, which helps avoid dryness and a sticky feeling through the rest of the day. Following the prescribed protocol closely, he notes, is necessary to get the desired hair growth and prevent further hair loss.

Is a Cool-Setting Blow Dryer Safe Before Applying Minoxidil?

Answering Rambabu's second question, Dr Watts confirmed that it is safe to use a blow dryer on a cool setting to dry the scalp before applying Minoxidil lotion.
