Dr. John Watts regularly answers hair loss questions from viewers on his channel. Here are four common questions on Minoxidil, Finasteride, post-transplant dandruff, and a persistent myth about water intake and hair fall.

Can I Reapply Minoxidil in the Evening Without a Head Bath?

A viewer asked whether Minoxidil applied in the morning can be reapplied in the evening without taking a head bath in between. Dr. Watts says it's always better to take a head bath before reapplying. "The scalp has to be clean and dry when you apply Minoxidil. So, it is necessary to take a head bath in the evening or morning depending upon when you apply it," he said.

Can Finasteride and Minoxidil Be Used Together?

Another viewer asked if Finasteride 1mg tablets and topical Minoxidil can be used at the same time. Dr. Watts confirms both can be combined, but only under a dermatologist's guidance. "You cannot self-medicate these drugs. It is your dermatologist who has the final say. He or she can even ask you to take both along with biotin supplement based on your condition," he said.

Can I Use Ketoconazole Shampoo After a Hair Transplant?

A patient who had already undergone a hair transplant asked about using ketoconazole shampoo for a new dandruff problem. Dr. Watts advised against experimenting without checking with the transplant team first. "It is better to consult your hair transplant team and take their advice first. If you want to go ahead, you can try any basic anti-dandruff shampoo and keep it on the scalp for two minutes before rinsing it off with water," he advised.

Does Drinking More Water Help Control Hair Fall?

A common belief is that drinking more water can stop hair fall. Dr. Watts says staying hydrated is always good for overall health, but there's no direct connection between water intake and hair fall control. "There are various factors that may result in hair loss conditions, and lack of nutrition could be one such reason," he said.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reapply Minoxidil in the evening without a head bath?

It's best to take a head bath first, since the scalp needs to be clean and dry before each Minoxidil application.

Can I use Finasteride and Minoxidil at the same time?

Yes, but only under a dermatologist's supervision -- self-medicating with both isn't recommended, and your doctor may also suggest biotin depending on your condition.

Can I use ketoconazole shampoo for dandruff after a hair transplant?

Check with your hair transplant team first. If you proceed, a basic anti-dandruff shampoo left on the scalp for two minutes before rinsing is a reasonable starting point.

Does drinking more water reduce hair fall?

Not directly. Hydration is good for general health, but Dr. Watts says there's no proven link between water intake and hair fall control -- nutrition is a more likely factor.
