In this round of the AskDrJohnWatts Q&A series, viewers wrote in about switching from a hair system to Minoxidil, changing Minoxidil brands, using anti-dandruff shampoo daily, a five-year-long dandruff problem, and whether a twice-daily head bath damages hair. Dr John Watts answers each question below.

Can I Switch From a Hair System to Minoxidil?

One viewer using a hair patch or wig asked if he could switch to Minoxidil instead. Dr Watts said that once a hair system, patch or wig is no longer serving its purpose, it can be discontinued — but a proper dermatologist consultation is needed first to assess the scalp. "Whether one needs biotin supplement, Minoxidil, PRP or mesotherapy, can best be decided by a dermatologist. If nothing works or is feasible, in case there is extensive baldness on the front, the only solution could be to opt for a hair transplant," he said.

Does Switching Minoxidil Brands Affect Results?

Another reader had used Minoxidil for four years, took a two-year break, then switched to a different brand made by Cipla and saw poorer results. Dr Watts clarified that changing brands isn't the issue: "For a reputed brand like Cipla, the results should not change as the molecules are the same." The real problem was the two-year gap in use. "There is a 2-year gap, which is a mistake as one has to continue using Minoxidil and not use it intermittently. Minoxidil shows results when one is in the early stage of baldness," he explained.

Can I Use Anti-Dandruff Shampoo Every Day?

A viewer using an anti-dandruff shampoo containing the chemical ciclopirox asked if daily use was fine. Dr Watts advised against it: "Anti-fungal shampoos should be used occasionally. At best, once a week can be used and not repeatedly."

What to Do About Long-Term Dandruff That Won't Go Away

For a reader dealing with five years of unresolved dandruff, Dr Watts recommended a KOH exam, a scalp test that checks for fungal infection. "It could be flaky skin on the scalp, excess sebum production or dermatitis. The best way to rule it out is to consult a dermatologist for a permanent solution," he said.

Is Taking a Head Bath Twice a Day Harmful?

Finally, a viewer asked if bathing his head twice daily was damaging his hair. Dr Watts said that shampooing twice a day could be harmful, but rinsing with plain water generally isn't. Hard water is the bigger concern, as it can dry out the scalp's natural oils. "There is also the possibility of hair cuticle getting damaged due to hard water," he added.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from a hair system to Minoxidil?

Yes, but consult a dermatologist first to assess your scalp condition; a hair transplant may be the only option if baldness is already extensive.

Does changing Minoxidil brands reduce its effectiveness?

No. Reputed brands contain the same active molecule, so switching brands doesn't cause poor results; taking a break from use does.

How often should I use anti-dandruff shampoo?

At most once a week. Anti-fungal shampoos should not be used daily.

What should I do if dandruff won't go away after years of trying shampoos?

Get a KOH scalp test to check for fungal infection and consult a dermatologist, since causes can include flaky skin, excess sebum or dermatitis.

Is a twice-daily head bath bad for hair?

Shampooing twice daily can be harmful, and washing with hard water can dry the scalp and damage the hair cuticle; plain water rinses are generally fine.
