There is much craze about Indulekha hair oil. But does it actually benefit your existing hair? Will it grow new hair on bald spots? Is it safe?

In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad with over 1,900 transplant procedures — reviews this popular Ayurvedic formulation.

What is Indulekha hair oil?

Indulekha is marketed as an Ayurvedic hair oil for long and strong hair. Made with herbs, it is said to be free from harsh chemicals like parabens, sulphates, silicones and synthetic dyes.

The four key ingredients

Dr. Watts highlights four main ingredients:

Bringhraj — a well-known herb traditionally used in Indian hair oils. “The minerals and antioxidants present in the herb help in hair growth promotion,” says Dr. John Watts.

Amla — brings vitamin C, and more importantly helps increase blood circulation that supports hair growth. Its high antioxidant content prevents hair damage.

Almond — contributes protein, the building block of hair.

Svetakutaja — high in anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties that protect the scalp from disease.

What the evidence says

Though Indulekha hair oil has good properties that promote healthy hair, Dr. Watts points out there are no scientific journal publications backing its claim as a hair growth promoter. “However, there are good testimonials from users who claimed to have benefited,” he notes.

Can it regrow hair on bald spots?

“No, unlikely. This is not achievable with Indulekha hair oil. At the most, one can get baby hair growth and the existing hair can get stronger. You cannot expect full-length hair growth on bald spots,” informs Dr. John.

How to use it

Using the applicator that comes with the oil, apply at least three times a week and continue for 4–5 months for good results. For detailed guidance, consult a qualified Ayurvedic expert.

The bottom line

Indulekha can support the health of your existing hair. For bald spots and progressing hair loss, you need a diagnosis and evidence-based treatment — not just oil.
