Two questions come up constantly from hair transplant patients: what are the normal side effects, and can Minoxidil replace a transplant? In this article based on his educational video, Dr. John Watts -- dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad with over 1,900 procedures -- answers both clearly.

Swelling after surgery

You may notice swelling on the scalp the day after your hair transplant. This is completely normal -- an iatrogenic (medically induced) process designed to protect the scalp from damage. "This swelling will go away on its own in a few days," explains Dr. John Watts -- typically 4 to 5 days.

Numbness on the scalp

The scalp area where the transplant took place will feel numb for a few days. In most patients this resolves quickly, but in some cases the numbness can persist for two weeks to a month or more. "This is also not unusual but there would be slight discomfort, which too would go away after some time," informs Dr. John Watts.

Is a hair transplant safe?

Yes, when performed by a qualified surgeon with proper infrastructure. The procedure is performed only at the skin-deep level, so damage to any underlying organ is impossible. The main investment is time -- a hair transplant typically takes five to six hours.

Hair Transplant vs Minoxidil: can one replace the other?

"Both have different uses and one cannot replace the other," explains Dr. John Watts. Minoxidil is for early stages of hair thinning. "It has no use if one has gone completely bald in a spot. In such a situation, hair transplant is the only solution." Think of them as complementary tools at different stages of hair loss, not alternatives to each other.

Frequently asked questions

Is swelling after a hair transplant normal?

Yes. Dr. John Watts explains it is an iatrogenic (medically induced) process to protect the scalp. It typically resolves within 4 to 5 days.

How long does numbness last after a hair transplant?

Usually a few days, but for some patients it can persist for two weeks to a month or more. It resolves on its own.

Can Minoxidil replace a hair transplant?

No. Minoxidil works during the early hair-thinning stage but has no effect on completely bald patches. A hair transplant is needed when baldness has established itself in a specific area.
