Questions about hair transplants, Minoxidil, and everyday hair care are among the most common Dr. John Watts receives. In this article, based on his popular FAQ video, Dr. Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — answers six questions that many patients share but rarely ask.

Can I wear a cap while using Minoxidil?

“Yes, you can wear a cap while going outside. There won’t be any problem,” Dr. Watts says, while advising regular scalp washing as part of a healthy hair care routine.

Does Minoxidil help with genetic baldness?

Minoxidil can help in both hereditary baldness and a general slowdown in hair growth. “It is always better if one consults a dermatologist. Sometimes, one does not even need Minoxidil as basic medicines or supplements may work instead,” he said.

Can I use hair dye after a hair transplant?

“The baldness problem will be solved with a hair transplant but using chemical-laced hair dye for your transplanted grey hair may backfire after some time,” warned Dr. John Watts. Minoxidil and Finasteride can be continued safely after a transplant.

Will wearing a cap cause Traction Alopecia?

Loosely worn caps do not cause Traction Alopecia. “In some members of the Sikh community or some women who tightly braid their hair — this may lead to traction alopecia and eventually loss of hair and baldness,” explains Dr. Watts. A loosely worn cap poses no such risk.

Can I get PRP if I have breathing difficulties?

PRP therapy for hair growth has no connection with respiratory conditions like asthma. “You can get a PRP done. However, it is advisable you first get your breathing problem medically treated by consulting a pulmonologist,” Dr. Watts advised.

Frequently asked questions

Can wearing a cap affect Minoxidil treatment?

No. Dr. John Watts says wearing a cap and applying Minoxidil have nothing to do with each other. You can wear a cap normally while on Minoxidil treatment.

Is it safe to use hair dye after a hair transplant?

Dr. Watts warns against it. Chemical-laced hair dyes may damage transplanted hair over time and could lead to hair thinning or renewed baldness.

Does wearing a cap cause Traction Alopecia?

Not if the cap is worn loosely. Traction Alopecia is caused by tightly braided hairstyles, not by wearing a cap.
