Two practical questions come up frequently among patients managing hair thinning — whether hair fibre works post-transplant and whether combining minoxidil and finasteride at home is safe. In this article based on his Q&A video, Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad — gives direct answers.

Can you use hair fibre after a hair transplant?

Mahesh K reported hair thinning one year after his transplant and asked whether hair fibre would work for him. He was also concerned about the fibre coming off due to excessive sweating.

Dr. Watts confirmed that hair fibre can be used regardless of whether someone has had a transplant. “Since you have hair thinning issues after a hair transplant, you too can use hair fibre to fill the gaps, or use it in the donor area if harvesting of hair grafts has led to hair thinning,” he said.

On sweating: there is a real risk of the fibre dislodging with excessive sweat. “To avoid such an embarrassing scenario, one can apply ‘Stick on Sprays’. They are available online. However, it is important that one should not try for extra thickness of hair fibre as it may backfire,” he advised.

Should you mix finasteride and minoxidil at home?

Prasad Chaudhary M wanted to know whether he could mix finasteride and minoxidil solutions at home and apply 2ml twice a day.

Dr. Watts was unambiguous: do not do it. “You should not experiment by mixing the two lotions at home. They need to be scientifically done. It could be risky,” he warned.

The good news is that readymade combination products are available. Dr. Watts named two popular options: Mintop Gain (available in 5% and 10% variations) and Tugain lotion (available with 0.1% finasteride and minoxidil). “However, you should not be using these drugs on self-prescription. Only a qualified dermatologist should prescribe their usage,” he emphasised.

For dosage guidance: start with 1ml per day for the first 15 days. After that, 1ml in the morning and 1ml at night for better results — always under medical supervision.
