Whether you are a teenager noticing hair fall or someone who works out regularly and is worried about hair loss, you likely have questions that deserve straight answers. Dr. John Watts — dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad with over 2,000 successful procedures — addresses four common viewer questions.

Is hair fall at age 15 a cause for concern?

Venkat Gadde, aged 15, asked why he was noticing hair fall. Dr. Watts reassured him that there is often little to worry about. “Just like how one notices moustache appearance suddenly out of nowhere, one can also note a little recession of the hairline at this age,” he explained. This is known as mature male pattern recession and is a normal developmental change.

However, he flagged a threshold: “It could be a cause of worry if one were to lose about 100 strands of hair a day instead of 10-20 strands. In such a scenario, one must consult a dermatologist to find out the cause.”

Does gym workout cause hair loss?

Chandrasekhar asked whether working out or sweating causes hair loss. Dr. Watts was direct: working out has no connection with hair loss, and even sweating is not a cause. “However, if one is taking anabolic steroids for muscle growth, it may lead to hair loss condition,” he answered.

Does using a hair straightener affect hair transplant eligibility?

M Munni asked how many days after using a hair straightener she needs to wait before a transplant. Dr. Watts explained that hair straighteners have no connection with transplant eligibility — there is no waiting period required. However, he advised avoiding frequent straightener use in general due to heat damage.

Can a single hair graft be split into multiple grafts?

Kishore asked whether one hair strand can be split into multiple grafts to increase the number of grafts available. Dr. Watts was clear: “The single hair graft cannot be split into multiple grafts.” Each graft must contain an intact follicle to grow.

Can gym workouts or sweating cause hair loss?

No. Dr. Watts says working out and sweating have no connection with hair loss. However, taking anabolic steroids for muscle growth can lead to hair loss.

Can a single hair graft be divided into multiple grafts during transplant?

No. Dr. Watts confirms that a single hair graft cannot be split into multiple grafts during a hair transplant procedure.
