Many people search online for hair oils and supplements that promise fast results, and cannabis or CBD-based hair oil is one product generating buzz. Dr John Watts, a Hyderabad-based dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon who has performed over 2,000 hair transplant surgeries, recently addressed two viewer questions -- whether CBD hair oil genuinely regrows hair, and whether standing for long hours at work can cause hair loss.

Can CBD or Cannabis Oil Regrow Hair?

A viewer named Venkata Sai Yashwant asked Dr Watts whether CBD or cannabis hair oil is safe to use, since online claims suggest it promotes hair growth. Dr Watts explained that CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a chemical derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, and it can appear to promote hair growth -- but not in the way people assume.

"It is not just cannabis hair oil or CBD hair oil, there are several products one can find on the internet that act as irritants when used on the scalp. They cause mild inflammation, leading to temporary hair growth as the growth factors are mobilised," Dr Watts said.

Why Using Scalp Irritants Is Not a Good Idea

According to Dr Watts, using an irritant to trigger hair growth is not a safe long-term strategy, especially without knowing the actual cause of the hair loss. Any growth triggered this way is a short-term inflammatory response, not a genuine treatment.

"For simple hair loss, nutritional deficiency can be a cause. Sometimes our bad lifestyle including stress can lead to hair loss. One needs to consult a nutritionist to cover such nutritional deficiencies," Dr Watts explained. For hair loss linked to conditions such as alopecia areata or genetic pattern baldness, he advised consulting a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis rather than experimenting with irritant-based products.

Does Standing for Long Hours Cause Hair Loss?

In a separate query, a viewer named Santosh, who works long shifts standing in a retail store, asked whether prolonged standing disrupts blood circulation and causes hair loss -- he had noticed hair loss over the previous four months.

Dr Watts clarified that standing for long durations can affect blood circulation, but it is unlikely to directly cause hair loss. "Such working conditions may not lead to hair loss directly but result in other health complications such as varicose veins. Mostly, professionals like hotel cooks or traffic cops have such working conditions. Hence, it is always advisable to take a break of 10-15 minutes out of every 1 hour of standing work," he advised.

What Could Actually Be Behind the Hair Loss

Rather than his job, Dr Watts suggested Santosh's hair loss was more likely linked to lifestyle factors such as stress, nutritional deficiencies, or a genetic cause. "The cause needs to be evaluated by a dermatologist," Dr Watts said, while also advising Santosh to rest in a sitting position whenever possible during long working hours.

Dr Watts's answers to both questions point to the same underlying principle: hair loss has an identifiable cause, whether nutritional, hormonal, genetic or lifestyle-related, and the smartest first step is a proper diagnosis rather than a shortcut. Scalp irritants might create the illusion of new growth, and standing at work might create general strain on the body, but neither should be mistaken for the real reason hair is falling.

This distinction matters in practice: self-treating with an untested irritant can delay a proper diagnosis, especially when the real cause needs targeted treatment such as hormonal correction, nutritional supplementation, or dermatological therapy for a condition like alopecia areata.

Frequently asked questions

Does CBD or cannabis hair oil regrow hair?

It can trigger temporary hair growth because it acts as a mild irritant on the scalp, causing inflammation that mobilises growth factors -- it is not a genuine treatment for hair loss.

Is it safe to use scalp irritants to promote hair growth?

Dr Watts advises against it, especially without knowing the exact cause of hair loss; a dermatologist should evaluate conditions like alopecia areata or genetic baldness first.

Can standing for long hours at work cause hair loss?

Prolonged standing can affect blood circulation but is unlikely to cause hair loss directly; it is more commonly linked to complications like varicose veins.

What can people who stand for long hours at work do to protect their health?

Dr Watts recommends taking a 10-15 minute break for every hour of standing work.

What are common causes of simple hair loss?

Nutritional deficiency, stress, poor lifestyle habits, or a genetic predisposition are common causes, and a dermatologist should evaluate the exact cause.
